This is our answer to trailer thefts. Our own trailer lock box design. Designed for trailers that use a 12-inch 5 position C- Channel mount for adjustable coupler heights.
Most locks secure the coupler, but the coupler on most dump trailers and other equipment trailers can be removed with just 2 bolts. That allows the user to raise or lower the coupler as needed to match the tow vehicle's hitch height with ease. But it doesn't slow down a thief.
By putting a regular lock on the coupler or mount, you barely effect the stealing process. The thief can remove the bolts with a wrench without making noise, install a new coupler and steal your trailer. With most dump trailers now starting at $8,000, and up, this is a serious problem. If you weld in your bolts so the thieves can't remove it, you loose the ability to raise or lower it as designed, losing functionality.
Invented, designed, and built by a retired police detective who is also a CNC machinist and a dump trailer rental business owner. He invented this lock after having one of his dump trailers stolen. The trailer had been secured with a commercially available name brand lock. He learned from this experience and designed a lock which solved the security shortcomings of the other available locking devices on the market.
The resulting lock box is constructed using 3/16" thick grade 50 steel. The lock box is designed to be used with puck locks which have the locking mechanism on their back side. There is a steel collar that covers the top of the lock but not the bottom. The lock sets into the collar which protects the back of the lock from being accessed and helps to shield the lock from the elements which could extend it's working lifespan.
These lock boxes are powder coated in black for a strong, durable, weather resistant finish.
The pins are constructed of 303 stainless steel.
To use this locking system, you just remove your coupler, install the locking cartridge in its place, slip on the lock box and put on the puck lock. It is a bit more work than just attaching a lock to the coupler, but if you want the trailer to be there when you come back for it than this is a much better option. A thief needs to be fast or quiet. With this lock, he will not be fast or quiet and would need multiple power tools and a significant amount of time to defeat it.
